Spencer Butterfield chooses Utah State - with bonus content!
News came out early Friday that Yuba College shooting guard Spencer Butterfield committed to play for Utah State next season, bringing with him the toughness and scoring punch that made him a superstar at the junior college level. The Aggies are getting a player who led his team in scoring, rebounding, and steals, while having the second most assists on his team as well.
His overall numbers were 16.3 points per game, 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists, all while hitting on 54.3 percent of his shots from the field and 48.2 percent from behind the 3-point line. Oh, and all of this is from a guy who is only 6'3.
Based on everything that's been reported about his toughness and persona as a player, mixed in with his statistics, Butterfield sounds like the ultimate hybrid between Brian Green and Jared Quayle. If that potential doesn't get you excited... well... you probably don't know who Green and Quayle are.
Butterfield helped carry Yuba College all the way to the championship game of California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, where Yuba ultimately fell short to Fresno City. Butterfield's play throughout the year though was good enough to share the honor of the CCCAA Player of the Year with Fresno City's Marcus Hall and former Aggie, James Walker.
In other words, this looks like a huge get for USU.
HOW THIS AFFECTS THE REST OF RECRUITING AND THE FUTURE
Assuming that Marvin Jean is still on his way to Logan as well, this should give USU a pair of quality players to contend with Danny Berger for minutes at the small forward spot, as well as give some quality minutes off the bench when Preston Medlin goes down for a rest. It also could get very tricky in a couple years to replace all these guys who will be juniors next season (Medlin, Berger, Bruneel, Butterfield and Jean). Jarred Shaw will be junior as well, as would Quan Conner if he chooses USU. If all these guys pan out, that would be one seriously deep team. Also probably another big rebuilding year after the 2013-2014 season, but doubtful that it'll be nearly as tough as this past year was.
Tenale Roland, the other point guard recruit USU is after, will only be a sophomore next season, just FYI. Roland is currently visiting USU, but it is unknown if an offer is on the table for him. We should likely know by the end of the weekend what is happening there.
IF YOU'RE NOT STOKED ON CARSON SHANKS YET, THEN YOU'RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION!!
How can you not love it when recruits are very obviously enthused about being a part of Utah State? When you know that they're as passionate about being Aggies as the rest of us, it makes it very easy to get in these guys' corner. Carson Shanks, the class of 2013 seven-footer from Minnesota, is the epitome of that kind of guy!
For starters, the dude tweets about USU all the freaking time. I've seen a couple of times when he's hit up the likes of Marcel Davis, Quincy Bair and Riley Bradshaw saying stuff like, "That's never happening when we get there" after a USU loss. He tweeted at Preston Medlin to give him props on making first-team all-WAC, and really just mentions USU whenever he gets the chance. He even has in his personal description on Twitter that he's a future Aggie.
Then this morning he dedicated his 2,000th tweet to USU and a handful of his future teammates. How can you not be stoked on that?!?!
He's not the only one either. Every one of Shanks, Davis, Bair and Bradshaw throw down USU tweets with regularity. Shanks seems to be the leader in the clubhouse though, which is all the more impressive because he's halfway across the country in Minnesota.
Cheers to you Carson. Stoked for you to get here!
